NEW DEBIT CARDS
Over the coming months, if you have a checking account with a corresponding debit card, you will receive a new one in the mail that looks like the one shown to the right. Not only do these new cards incorporate our new colors, they also have some great new technology to make your transactions more secure than ever - an EMV chip.

EMV CHIP TECHNOLOGY
EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and VISA, the original developers of the EMV chip. EMV chip technology has become the global standard for debit and credit cards. The computer chip that is embedded in your new card creates a unique transaction code for each and every transaction that is made, unlike the magnetic stripe that holds data that does not change. If a hacker gets a hold of chip information, card duplication won't work because the information that was stolen was unique to that transaction - so further transactions would be declined.

This technology doesn't stop fraud from happening completely, but it significantly reduces the possibility for card duplication fraud. While your new card will have both the EMV chip and the magnetic stripe, more and more merchants have chip readers for this purpose.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

When you receive your new card in the mail, follow the instructions included to activate it. Once you activate your new card, your old card will stop working automatically. However, you should still destroy your old card. If you are unable to destroy it yourself, you are welcome to turn it in to any SVCU branch and we will destroy it on your behalf.

Once activated, you can begin using your card! You can now use your card wherever VISA cards are accepted. For even more security, if you are prompted to select debit or credit, choose the credit option. This may require you to sign for your purchase, but it reduces any risk associated with inputting your pin number into a merchant card terminal.

As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at 207-282-6169.
